(NASDAQ: VIVS) is expanding the potential commercial reach of its NAMkind™ drug toxicology platform, announcing plans to develop a rat liver model that would complement its existing 3D human liver model and help pharmaceutical companies distinguish animal-specific toxicity from risks that may translate to humans.

The development could broaden VivoSim’s role in pharmaceutical R&D by creating a cross-species toxicology capability that works alongside existing animal-testing workflows. VivoSim’s human liver model is designed to identify potential human toxicity that may not appear in animal studies, while the planned rat model would help determine whether adverse findings observed in rats may be species-specific rather than predictive of human risk.

For pharmaceutical companies, that additional information could help determine whether drug candidates should advance, be modified, further investigated or discontinued before substantially more development capital is committed.

VivoSim plans to validate the rat model using compounds with known differences between rat and human liver toxicity. If successfully validated and commercially adopted, the paired platform could expand the use of NAMkind™ across preclinical toxicology, candidate selection and investigative toxicology.

The strategy also strengthens VivoSim’s broader positioning around 3D human tissue models and AI-powered predictive toxicology. The company has previously reported approximately 91% predictive accuracy for liver toxicity, while its intestinal platform and predictive analytics have demonstrated strong performance identifying drug-induced gastrointestinal toxicity.

The expansion comes as the FDA continues advancing New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and human-relevant testing approaches intended to reduce reliance on traditional animal studies. While this regulatory movement does not represent FDA endorsement of VivoSim specifically, it could provide a favorable industry backdrop for validated human-based toxicology technologies.

For VIVS investors, the planned cross-species capability could expand the commercial utility and addressable applications of NAMkind™. VivoSim has reiterated expectations for 500%+ fiscal 2027 revenue growth from its NAM-based contract research business and recently reported approximately $10.1 million in cash, supported in part by a $5 million milestone payment from Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) related to a previously divested drug program.
